Global Coach-2007 Charlotte Bobcats, Charlotte, NC

I clearly remember thinking “dreams do come true” I was sitting at a

head table in the media room of the Charlotte Bobcats and we were

having a press conference to announce me as the Head Coach of the

Charlotte Bobcats.

To my right was ex-team mate and friend, Michael Jordan and to my left

was one of the most successful minority businessmen in America, Bob

Johnson. Also in the room, was a long time friend Fred Whitfield and the

retiring head coach, Bernie Bickerstaff.

In a mind full of wonderful basketball moments and memories that will

be special for a life-time, this moment was surreal. The greatest

basketball player of all time was giving me the keys to operate one of his

most prized possessions.

We started off the season 7-3 and were playing great basketball and

there was a confidence building that we could compete and win against

any team in the league. That belief was going to be tested by a red hot

Boston Celtics team that had started the season on a rampage and

where coming into the Charlotte arena 17-0.

With 5 seconds left we were winning by 2 and feeling like we had just

accomplished one of the biggest upsets of the year, when Jason

Richardson inbounded the ball and the pass was stolen by Ray Allen,

who launched a 3 pointer that went all nets. It was a moment I will

never forget and a lesson I learned. If you want the good you have to

accept the bad as well.

We finished the season 32-50, and played with heart and courage all

season long. I will always appreciate the opportunity Michael gave me

as head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. Many rumors have been written

about comments that suggest I questioned Michael’s efforts as a

Executive and Owner committed to winning and they are all false. Let

me clearly state, that nobody has worked as hard or been more

committed to winning as a player or owner than MJ, and I will always

appreciate the memory of head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats.
